На 25 км от София, в град Бухово, са се намирали една от най-големите уранови мини в България, завод за преработка на рудата и хвостохранилище. След преустановяването на уранодобива през 1992 г., мината е рекултивирана от наета от Министерство на околната среда и водите фирма.По-късно, чрез проект, финансиран от Европейския съюз, са опуснати над 6 млн. лв., които са предназначени за реконструкция на хвостохранилището- укрепване на стените му, за да отговарят на земетръсните норми, укрепване на свлачище в района и спиране на изтичащите от него радиоактивни води. Въпреки вложените милиони за рекултивация на мината, радиационния фон в района на Бухово е повишен, поставени са няколко табели, забраняващи преминаването на хора и животни през обекта, но на практика всеки може да премине от там необезпокояван.
Въпреки табелата, забраняваща влизането на хора и животни в района на мината и хвостохранилището в Бухово, хората пасат животните си по поляните, по който се стичат радиоактивни води.
Марулите в двора на баба Ганка от Бухово не струват 36 стотинки, а 36 микроренгена в минута…
Гайгеровият брояч отчита натрупващата се радиация на път, минаващ край къщите в Бухово. Най-високите измерени стойности на радиационния фон не са при хвостохранилището или мината, а на местата, през който се стичат дъждовните води, там където минават хора, пеша или с колите си, играят деца.
