На 2 км от една от най-популярните туристически дестинации в България - Мелник, се намират четири шахти на бивша уранова мина. След решението за преустановяване на уранодобива в България, шахтите са затворени, а входовете им - бетонирани. В момента мината е обрасла в храсти, изоставена и забравена, но радиация около нея все още има. Чакащите автобуса за Мелник хора от съседните на мината села Лозеница и Виногради знаят, че на 10 метра от спирката е една от шахтите на урановата мина, но до такава степен са свикнали с нея или пък са я забравили, че не изпитват никакво притеснение да минават всеки ден оттам, да обработват градините и лозята си и да пасат животните си около нея. Минаващите по пътя за Мелник, също не обръщат особено внимание на мината, тъй като няма никаква маркировка, указваща повишен радиационен фон.
Района на Мелник е известен с добрите си вина, но не и с урановите мини край тях. Високи сини планини, реки и златни равнини, небето като от коприна, а ей това е…нашата мина.
Бетонът, с който е запечатана мината е разбит, а арматурата - открадната и издадена за скрап. На разбития бетон на входа гайгеровия брояч отчита стойности от 3 до 13 пъти над нормата.
На 10 метра от една от четирите шахти минава пътя за Мелник. Там всеки ден хора от съседните села чакат автобуса (без да се тревожат от високото напрежение, както някои от тях наричат радиацията), край тях пасат животни, има и импровизиран паркинг.
